Palestinian teen killed by Israeli forces in Gaza protests

Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian and injured dozens more in mass protests along the fence separating the besieged Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied territories for the 48th consecutive Friday.

The spokesman for the Gaza Ministry of Health, Ashraf al-Qidra, said in a statement that 15-year-old Yusuf Saeed Hussein al-Daya was fatally shot in the chest during a Great March of Return protest east of Gaza City.

Qidra added that 41 demonstrators were struck with live rounds and transferred to nearby hospitals. Three of the injuries were described as critical.

Among the wounded Palestinians was paramedic Fares al-Qudra, who sustained injuries when a tear gas canister hit him in the head.

Palestinians have held weekly protests on the Gaza border over the siege on the enclave and the right for refugees to return to their homes they were forcibly expelled from during the 1948 creation of Israel.

More than 260 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces ever since anti-occupation protest rallies began in the Gaza Strip on March 30. Over 26,000 Palestinians have also sustained injuries.

The Gaza clashes reached their peak on May 14 last year, on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Nakba Day (Day of Catastrophe), which coincided this year with the US embassy relocation from Tel Aviv to occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds.

On June 13, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, sponsored by Turkey and Algeria, condemning the Israeli regime for the death of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

The resolution, which had been put forward on behalf of Arab and Muslim countries, garnered a strong majority of 120 votes in the 193-member assembly, with eight votes against and 45 abstentions.

The resolution called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days “on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation,” including “recommendations regarding an international protection mechanism.”

It also called for “immediate steps towards ending the closure and the restrictions imposed by Israel on movement and access into and out of the Gaza Strip.”

Iran elections: What you need to know about key vote
Voters in Iran are heading to the polls on Friday in the country's first parliamentary election after the implementation of a nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

The vote is seen by many analysts as a potential battleground between hardliners in the country and those reformists who have seen their powers wane over the last decade.

On the eve of the important nationwide elections, here is what you need to know.

Who are the candidates?

On Friday, votes will be cast for Iran's two major political institutions: the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts.

More than 6,200 candidates, including 586 women, are vying for Iran's 290-seat parliament. In the capital Tehran alone, over 1,000 candidates are competing for 30 seats.

A large number of reform candidates have been blocked from running by the Guardian Council, the body of clerics and jurists who are allied with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. 

Voices from Iran: Voters hope for economic growth

In a sign of the apparatus employed by the state to control elections, more than 12,000 people initially registered as candidates - but more than half were disqualified, in a process that is seen by many as opaque. 

In the other election for the Assembly of Experts, 800 people applied to stand - but the Guardian Council cleared just 161 of them and disqualified all female applicants.

Overall, 88 members will be chosen in the influential body - its members monitor the work of the supreme leader and choose his successor.

Is a high voter turnout expected?

Parliamentary elections rarely inspire the same enthusiasm as presidential elections in Iran.

Presidential elections held in 2013 saw a nearly 73 percent voter turnout.

In comparison, the parliamentary elections of 2012, which were boycotted by many moderates and reformists in the wake of contested 2009 presidential elections and a subsequent crackdown, around 64 percent of Iranians voted. 

What is the state of the reform movement?

Last week, the grandson of the Islamic Republic;s founding father, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who is widely viewed as a future leader of the country's reformist movement, was among those who was prevented from competing. 

His disqualification is seen by analysts as an important indication of state control over the elections.

"That message is: We do not share any power with you," said Nader Karimi Joni, a journalist close to the reformist movement. "The more reformists in the Assembly, the more chance they will get to pick a new leader closer to their line of thinking."

Why is the Assembly vote significant?

There is an added importance to this year's Assembly elections since in theory, it is the body which can replace the supreme leader.

Khamenei is currently 76 years old and it remains highly likely that either during or after his next eight years, members will vote for a replacement.

Reformists and moderates are looking to take advantage of the situation by throwing their weight behind former president, Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Rafsanjani, 80, was the president of the Islamic Republic from 1989 to 1997 and is seen as one of its founding members.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he was the first speaker of parliament, before becoming the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces during the protracted Iran-Iraq war.

When Ayatollah Khomeini died in 1989, Rafsanjani was crucial in the appointment of Khamenei. He is now head of the expediency council, which acts as a bridge between Parliament and the Guardian Council.

Reformists are hoping that Rafsanjani can block support for three ultra-conservative leaders, Mohammad Taghi Mesbah-Yazdi, Ahmad Jannati and Mohammad Yazdi.

The election will also be seen as vote of confidence in President Hassan Rouhani, who has two years remaining in his presidency and is tipped to run again in 2017.

Rouhani's stewardship of the Iranian economy after the lifting of sanctions will be a key component of his campaign in 2017.

While it is too early to see any improvement on the Iranian economy - and with oil trading at historically low prices - Rouhani has been instrumental in attracting foreign business delegations to Tehran over the last 20 months.

He has also undertaken important visits to France and Italy to attract investment to the country.

Hillary Clinton has won the Democratic Party caucuses in Nevada, beating Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator, while Donald Trump prevailed in the crowded Republican nominating primary in South Carolina. 

Saturday's contest was the first test for the White House hopefuls Clinton and Sanders in a more racially diverse state than the opening contests in Iowa and New Hampshire, which the candidates split.

Meanwhile, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who has done poorly in the first three early Republican contests, suspended his campaign.

Voters in South Carolina backed Trump in the "First in the South" contest to pick the Republican nominee for the November 8 US presidential election.

While Clinton's campaign once saw Nevada as an opportunity to start pulling away from Sanders, her team had anticipated a close contest with Sanders.

The victories put Clinton and Trump in strong positions as the 2016 presidential election barreled toward the March 1 Super Tuesday contests, a delegate-rich voting bonanza.

"There's nothing easy about running for president," Trump said at his victory rally. "It's tough, it's nasty, it's mean, it's vicious. It's beautiful - when you win it's beautiful."

Clinton's roughly five-point win eased the rising anxieties of her backers, who feared a growing challenge from Sanders.

At a raucous victory rally in Las Vegas, she lavished praise on her supporters and declared, "This one is for you."

Trump's strong showing in South Carolina marked his second straight victory in the Republican primaries and strengthened his unexpected claim on the party nomination. No Republican in recent times has won New Hampshire and South Carolina and then failed to win the nomination.

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, a pair of freshman senators, were locked in a race for second place in South Carolina. Bush and other candidates lagged far behind.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher, reporting from Columbia, South Carolina, said Trump's win came despite another controversial week where he called Bush a liar and had his Christianity questioned by Pope Francis.

"Trump will move on with momentum from here," Fisher said.

Close contest

For Democrats, the contest between Clinton and Sanders has grown closer than almost anyone expected.

Sanders, an avowed democratic socialist, has energised voters, particularly young people, with his impassioned calls for breaking up Wall Street banks and providing free tuition at public colleges and universities.

Clinton hoped to offset Sanders' youth support by winning big majorities among blacks and Hispanics.

She eyed Nevada, where one-fourth of the population is Hispanic, as the first in a series of contests that would highlight that strength.

Reporter's Notebook: Republican field to narrow after South Carolina

A victory for Sanders would have given his campaign a boost heading into the Democratic contests in 11 states on Super Tuesday.

Democrats gathered at 200 caucus sites, including six at Las Vegas Strip casinos so housekeepers, blackjack dealers and others with weekend schedules could attend.

Democrats and Republicans will swap locations in the coming days. Republicans hold their caucuses in Nevada on Tuesday, while Democrats clash in South Carolina on February 27.
